Short: Search Altavista in AmIRC or CLI, New Version! (2.0)
Author: purplet@dingoblue.net.au (Purple)
Uploader: purplet@dingoblue.net.au (Purple)
Type: comm/irc
Yet another script for AmIRC :) But a handy one! Allows AltaVista to be
searched and the results displayed in the current AmIRC window OR in a CLI.
I have no idea if this kinda script has been done before... but here's my
version anyway if it has :)
Hopefully, this will be the last time I have to fix this. Altavista seem
to change their cgi scripts like they do their underwear, so the output
is always changing. I removed most of the description and date stuff, so
now it will just display the relevant URL. It should be fairly "Update-Proof"
but you never know ;-)
Httpresume is no longer needed (So get off my back, Mick!! :) ), so it should
be a little faster now too.
Installation & Configuration
----------------------------
1. Open AVSearch in your text editor and change the MaxHits to a value between
1 and 10. This is the maximum number of URLs that will be displayed in
AmIRC or CLI. Change the AVSTempFile location if you like.
2. Copy the edited script to Amirc:Rexx/
3. Make an alias in AmIRC: /alias /AV /RX AVSearch %p
If you also want to use it in the CLI, add this line to your startup-sequence
AFTER the AmIRC path assign: Alias AVS "RX AmIRC:Rexx/AVSearch.Amirx"
Usage
-----
Amirc: /AV <Search Keywords>
Shell: AVS <Search Keywords>
Search results return in approximately the same time it takes to retrieve the
same search results in a regular browser. Some searches may take longer due to
the search keywords used and the number of web pages altavista finds ;-)
Results will be displayed while they are being downloaded. If no results were
found, AVSearch will notify you of this.
Bugs
----
This was done as a quickie request for someone in under an hour, so there's
likely to be plenty of bugs.
Please EMail me if you find one :) Suggestions very welcome ;-)
Seeya,
Purple
